Two musical forms you might not expect to be mentioned in the same breath are indie-pop and barbershop harmony. But they came together with great success recently when two members of Manchester Indie group Lisa Brown visited Stockport barbershop chorus Harmony Revival.
It all started when Rick Boardman and Adam “Nev” Jennings met Harmony Revival chairman Ken Patchen at a social event. Their ears pricked up when they heard “barbershop harmony” and they were immediately invited to come along to Offerton Methodist Church, where the chorus rehearses every Wednesday.
“We’re really into vocal harmonies and this is a brilliant place to learn”, said Rick and Nev, who come from Marple and Hazel Grove respectively. “Groups like the Beachboys began by singing barbershop harmonies in college, and many others have followed them. It’s an amazing sound however you use it, and the guys have made us incredibly welcome.”
Lisa Brown are getting rave reviews from their regular gigs all around the country and will be appearing at Manchester’s Night & Day on 26th January. Their first single “What’s that Sound” is selling well and an album is on the way. All the band’s news can be found at www.lisabrown.net
“These lads are excellent musically and we’re having a great time together,” added Ken Patchen, our chairman. “That’s what barbershop is all about. It’s music for every generation, and we’d be delighted to hear from men of any age who’d like to give it a try.” Harmony Revival can be contacted on 486 6667 or 439 3406, or at www.harmonyrevival.co.uk.
